Centre for Education, Research and Training on Kidney Diseases, University of Peradeniya has drawn a letter to the His excellency Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka. Through this letter, it was pointed out that according to the current evidence the causative factor of CKD is consuming naturally contaminated well water containing fluoride and hardness and not through agrochemicals. Further, it was highlighted that the disease can be prevented through the distribution of rainwater collection tanks and consuming water treated by reverse osmosis in endemic areas. Thus, the Ministry of supply requested to National Water Supply and Drainage Board to provide a comprehensive report at the earliest possible since it’s a matter of national importance.

The Centre for Innovation, CEWAS has taken up an initial step with the experts oriented on this subject under the title of Causation and Prevention of the kidney disease of unknown Etiology (CKDu). The team consists of Prof. J.M.A.Manathunga (University of Moratuwa), Prof. Rasnayake M.Mudiyanse (University of Peradeniya), Dr.Ayomi Witharana (University of Colombo) and Dr. Mrs. Wasantha Illangasinghe (Director- CEWAS). And also the team members of Centre for Innovation, Eng.Eranda Rajapakse (Head), Eng. G.S.D.Chanaka and Eng.S.Sajitthan and Ms.Thilini Bandara (Undergraduate- University of Colombo) provides their support to the initiation of the above subject.
